Naturally Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Dishes to Enjoy
Before diving into specific recipes, let’s highlight some classic Thanksgiving dishes that are inherently gluten-free, requiring no special modifications! This makes menu planning significantly easier and ensures there are always safe options for gluten-sensitive guests. However, it’s crucial to always verify ingredients and preparation methods, as gluten can sometimes be unexpectedly present in sauces, broths, or seasonings. Being vigilant about labels and asking questions is key to a truly safe and enjoyable meal.
Here’s a list of traditional dishes that are typically safe for a gluten-free diet:
- Roasted Turkey: The star of the show is naturally gluten-free. Just be cautious with brines, rubs, or stuffings placed inside the bird if they contain gluten-based ingredients.
- Jello Salads: Most gelatin desserts are naturally gluten-free, offering a refreshing and often vibrant addition to the meal. Always check the package for any hidden gluten.
- Mashed Potatoes: Potatoes themselves are GF. Ensure any additions like broths, creams, or flavorings are also gluten-free.
- Roasted Vegetables: A simple, delicious, and naturally gluten-free choice. Toss with olive oil, herbs, salt, and pepper for a healthy and flavorful side.
- Cranberry Sauce: Whether homemade or store-bought, cranberry sauce is almost always gluten-free. Homemade versions offer greater control over ingredients.
- Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallow Topping: Sweet potatoes are naturally GF, and most marshmallows are as well. Watch out for any crumb toppings that might contain gluten.
- Steamed Vegetables: A straightforward and healthy option. Broccoli, green beans, carrots, and asparagus are excellent choices, served plain or with a simple butter or herb dressing.
By understanding these naturally safe options, you can build a robust and inclusive Thanksgiving menu without starting every dish from scratch. Remember to always double-check labels for hidden gluten in condiments, broths, and seasoning mixes to keep your holiday table completely safe for everyone.
Essential Gluten-Free Thanksgiving Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday
- Be a Proactive Guest: If you’re attending a holiday gathering and have dietary restrictions, offering to bring dishes you know are safe is a thoughtful gesture. This alleviates pressure on your host to prepare unfamiliar recipes, minimizes potential cross-contamination, and guarantees you won’t miss out on your favorite Thanksgiving delights. Preparing a show-stopping gluten-free dish demonstrates consideration and ensures your enjoyment.
- Educate and Advocate: When visiting for the holidays, don’t be shy about discussing your dietary needs. Many non-GF cooks may not be aware of common cross-contamination issues or where gluten might be lurking in unexpected ingredients. Clearly communicate what you can eat, and proactively suggest bringing specific dishes or ingredients to contribute to the meal, ensuring your safety and peace of mind.
- Mind Your Broth Choices: Chicken broth is a staple in many Thanksgiving recipes, but not all brands are gluten-free. Always check labels carefully. Reliable gluten-free chicken broth brands typically include College Inn, Imagine, Swanson, Kitchen Basics, Pacific Foods, Aldi’s Simply Organic, and Aldi’s Chef’s Cupboard. Stock up on these trusted options to prevent accidental gluten exposure in your gravies and stuffings.
- Scrutinize Sneaky Ingredients: Thanksgiving cooking often involves multiple hands in the kitchen, which can introduce hidden gluten. Be on high alert for ingredients like condensed soups, seasoning packets, and Worcestershire sauce, which frequently contain gluten. Politely inquire about ingredients used in shared dishes before indulging. A quick question can prevent a day of discomfort and ensure a safe dining experience for everyone.
- Navigate Appetizer Platters Safely: Grazing boards and appetizer spreads can be tricky for gluten-free guests due to cross-contamination from communal dipping. Come prepared with your own favorite gluten-free crackers (Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers are a fantastic choice!). When it’s time to serve, don’t hesitate to scoop your portion first, directly from the main dish, to avoid gluten transfer from shared serving utensils or double-dipping.

Classic Gluten-Free Bread Stuffing with Apples

Ingredients
- 1 recipe gluten-free bread (2 pound loaf),, see recipe notes for using store-bought
- 9 ½ tablespoons butter,, divided
- 3 celery stalks,, diced
- 1 medium onion,, diced
- ⅓ cup fresh parsley,, minced
- 1 ½ teaspoon dried sage, (2 tablespoon fresh minced)
- ¾ teaspoon dried thyme, (1 tablespoon fresh minced)
- ¾ teaspoon dried marjoram, (1 tablespoon fresh minced)
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 3 large eggs
- 1 apple,, peeled and diced
- 3 cups gluten-free chicken broth
Instructions
-
Begin by slicing the gluten-free bread into 1/2-inch cubes and evenly distribute them between two baking sheets. Allow the bread cubes to air dry at room temperature for 24 hours. Alternatively, for a quicker method, toast the bread cubes in a 225ºF (107°C) oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring them gently every 10 minutes to ensure even drying.
-
Liberally grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with ½ tablespoon of butter. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Melt 6 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced celery and onions to the skillet. Cook and stir continuously for 8-10 minutes, or until the vegetables have softened and become translucent.
-
Stir in the fresh parsley, dried sage, dried thyme, dried marjoram, salt, and pepper. Continue to cook and stir for just 1 minute longer to allow the herbs to become fragrant, then remove the skillet from the heat.
-
In a large mixing bowl, whisk the three large eggs until well combined. Add the dried bread cubes, the diced apple, and the cooked butter-herb-vegetable mixture to the bowl. Pour the gluten-free chicken broth over all the ingredients. Gently stir everything together until well combined and the bread cubes have begun to absorb the liquid.
-
Spread the stuffing mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish. Melt the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter and drizzle it over the top of the stuffing. Cover the dish securely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top of the stuffing is golden brown and crispy.

Gluten-Free Bread Options for Perfect Stuffing
For the absolute best texture and flavor in your stuffing, we highly recommend using a quality homemade gluten-free bread recipe, such as our highly-reviewed gluten-free bread. The homemade option provides superior structure and taste that truly elevates the dish.
If you prefer using store-bought options, reliable brands like Canyon Bakehouse or Schar work wonderfully. You will need two loaves of most store-bought gluten-free bread to achieve the required volume for this recipe. Ensure the bread is dried out properly before use, as detailed below.
Adjusting for a Smaller Portion: Half Recipe
To prepare a smaller portion of stuffing, simply halve all the ingredients. You can use one loaf of store-bought gluten-free bread or half of a homemade loaf (freezing the remainder for future use). Bake the reduced recipe in an 8×8-inch baking dish for proportional results.
Make-Ahead and Freezing Instructions
This stuffing can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance. Cover it securely and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake. Be aware that assembling ahead of time will result in the liquids soaking into the bread cubes more thoroughly, yielding a softer overall consistency.
For the best results when preparing ahead, especially if refrigerating overnight, it’s crucial to thoroughly dry out the bread first. Let the bread cubes sit out at room temperature for 2-3 days, or toast them in a 225ºF (107°C) oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cubes should be firm and dry, similar to the consistency of traditional stuffing mixes like Pepperidge Farm or Stove Top. This ensures they maintain their shape and texture even after absorbing moisture overnight.
To freeze baked stuffing, follow the recipe directions completely and allow the stuffing to cool entirely. Wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, then cover it with aluminum foil. It can be frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw the frozen stuffing in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Reheating Leftovers
If reheating thawed frozen stuffing, remove the plastic wrap, recover with foil, and let it stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Bake in a 325°F (160°C) oven for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the stuffing is thoroughly heated through and the top is slightly crispy.
For individual portions, the microwave is a convenient option. We recommend heating at 50% power for 1-2 minutes, then finishing at full power until warmed to your liking.
